Walk: Hospice du Grand St Bernard to Bourg St Pierre
The standard route today is a very easy stage – fairly short and almost entirely downhill. For a bit more of a challenge, you may wish to consider the alternative route via the Fenêtre de Ferret and the Lacs de Fenêtre, as set out in your guidebook (18km, 815m ascent, 1664m descent).
From the Hospice set off initially along a road, but after a few metres a signpost will point out the footpath forking off to the right. The path then generally follows the valley downhill, never far from the stream at the base. Sometimes the road disappears above you, but at other times you’re right next to it.
Cross the road close to a tiny reservoir, and soon after pass the farm building at La Pierre. From here you’ll hug the left side of the valley as you descend towards the huge reservoir of Lac de Toules, views of which gradually open up before you. The large building on the other side of the valley to your right is the entrance to the Grand St Bernard road tunnel.
A wide track brings you along the west side of the Lac de Toules, as the valley gradually widens. At the north end, just above the dam, you’ll pass an informal cafe. It’s outdoor seating only, and the opening times are a little unreliable, but it’s a great spot for a stop if they happen to be open when you pass.
From the dam descend into a wonderful pine forest, which gives way to fields as you approach the village of Bourg St Pierre.
