Via Francigena from Martigny to Orsières

Orsières

This stage marks the start of the ascent to the Great Saint Bernard pass.

From Martigny, cross the town to Martigny-Croix (railway station) then follow the Vita trail along the railway line. The path then becomes steep along the Dranse river before crossing the footbridge and climbing up to the village of Valettes which you cross to reach the railway station and village of Bovernier. After leaving the village, you cross the Trappists area in a pleasant forest but on a steep path.

At the exit of the Trappists, after skirting a dyke opposite the road tunnel, you reach a wide dirt road that will take you to the Sembrancher railway station. Cross this pretty medieval town to pass under the railway tracks and climb towards the hamlet of La Garde. From there, join the Napoleon path that will lead you through meadows and forests above the village of La Douay then to Orsières (railway and bus station, tourist office, accommodation, food).
