To walk this stage of the Via Francigena is perhaps to walk on the most symbolic stretch of the entire route to reach the hospice of the Grand-Saint-Bernard at 2470 meters, the highest point between Canterbury and Rome.

Be sure not to miss the visit to the treasure and the church of the hospice, the museum, and the kennel with its famous Saint Bernard dogs!

Directions

Cross the village by the old road then leave it on the right to descend towards the Dranse, which you must cross. Continue on the road leading to the top of the Toules dam wall.

Follow the dam almost to the road that climbs to the pass. Pass through the Pierre alpine pasture then the Hospitalet, cross the road then continue to reach near the second chimney of the tunnel. Continue through the Combe des Morts to reach the Grand-Saint-Bernard Pass.

Getting there

Exit the highway at Martigny.

Follow the direction Grand-Saint-Bernard and continue to Bourg-St-Pierre.

Free parking in front of the town hall

Take the train to Orsières then the bus to the Grand-Saint-Bernard
